Sailor has appeared on these pages quite a few times over the years – mostly in the form of pens such as the 1911 and Pro Gear. The TUZU, however, is something rather different.
Instead of building another variation of one of its established classics, Sailor developed the TUZU around a fairly simple question: how can a fountain pen accommodate the way different people actually hold a pen? The result is an adjustable grip and nib system that allows the nib position to be rotated in 10-degree increments while keeping the grip where it naturally sits in your hand.
Development of the TUZU began back in 2019 with interviews of fountain pen beginners and non-users. Over several years, Sailor developed the parts of the pen – including the nib – specifically around that idea. It is an unusually user-centred approach to fountain-pen design, especially from a company with as much heritage as Sailor.
The version reviewed here is the rather understated Gray, made from recycled polycarbonate and equipped with a stainless-steel nib. And while the whole adjustment concept obviously needs to be experienced rather than explained at length, that is exactly what the video review below is for.
