Here comes yet another episode of the “Comparative Overview-Series“, bringing you side-by-side in-depth comparisons of pens that you likely would like to just see like that: side-by-side.

The episode right here does focus on two Japanese classics from Pilot’s Custom line. On the one hand we have the Pilot Custom 823 – the heavyweight of the two, both literally and figuratively. A substantial vacuum-filling pen with a warm brown resin body, gold trim, and a 14k gold nib that means serious business. On the other hand we have the Pilot Custom 74 – the leaner, lighter sibling. A cartridge/converter pen in black resin with rhodium trim that has quietly earned a devoted following for its understated reliability.

Both pens share the same Custom DNA: smooth Japanese 14k gold nibs, quality resin bodies, and that distinctly Pilot balance between restraint and refinement.
