The Pilot Custom Heritage 91 is one of those pens that doesn’t shout for attention – and that’s precisely the point. Sitting comfortably in the middle of Pilot’s impressive mid-range lineup, between the well-known Custom 74 and the Custom Heritage 92, the 91 is a classically styled cartridge/converter pen with a 14k gold nib and a understated elegance that rewards a closer look.
The pen sits in a traditional slender and light figure, with a resin body and rhodium-plated trim throughout. The color lineup has a nice set of options including an orange (reviewed here), a deep blue, and classic black. Whichever color you go for, the aesthetic stays consistent: restrained, professional, and very Japanese.
What really sets the Custom Heritage 91 apart is the nib selection. Beyond the standard EF/F/M/B options, Pilot offers a range of soft nibs – the Soft Fine (SF), Soft Medium (SM), and Soft Fine-Medium (SFM) – that give the pen a springy, responsive feel that sits somewhere between a firm workhorse and a interesting flex’ish nib. It’s not a flex pen per se, but there’s a satisfying give to it that makes writing feel particularly pleasant.
