The company Verge has recently contacted me and asked me if I would be interested in doing a review of a rollerball pen – the so called “Sens Pen” – that came out of a Kickstarter campaign. I had a quick look at the pen online, and since it looked like a promising product, I agreed on a review. The pen arrived and – spoiler alert – I quickly found that this is a really good pen that I liked quite a bit.
Anyway, a little background research made me stumble upon a review of that very same pen by a fellow review-colleague, Matthew Morse of Nib & Ink. In his review, Matthew recognizes the quality of the pen, but rightfully points towards a unmistakable similarity of the Sens pen to another pen which is a lot more expensive and also around for quite a bit longer – the Ajoto pen.
Personally, I found this fact a little disturbing, to say the least. I tried to wrap my head around all this and even considered to just not review the Sens pen for what obviously might have been at play here – I’ll leave this implicit – and what I then would not be particularly fond of.
I finally decided that I had initially agreed on reviewing the pen, and since I stand by my word, I would review the pen. I would try and be fair towards the pen and look at it as the product that it is. And it is a good pen. But I would also not hesitate to point out the fact mentioned above – and that I personally find disturbing. I would then have met my duty, and at the same time said what needed to be said about the pen.
