If you are into fountain pens, ink, fine writing, and the like, it normally won’t take long for you to stumble upon and get interested in this thing called Calligraphy. While I don’t aim for providing a precise definition of this term here, the idea of calligraphy often translates into ‘nice handwriting’. And while nice handwriting does actually indeed include ‘nice handwriting’ in the literal sense (i.e. the command of cursive, some kind of script, or ‘beautiful letter formation’, if you like), there is also a technical aspect to it.
A beautiful letter shape can not only be achieved by ‘forming’ beautiful letters through hand motion, but also through the design of the writing instruments writing tip. With markers this may be chisel or brush tips for instance. In fountain pens, it is most commonly architect/hebrew or stub/italic nibs that assist the writer in giving the writing what we call ‘line variation’ (e.g. wide horizontal and thin vertical strokes – or vice versa; flex nibs, zoom nibs, and the like allow for other kinds of line variation, but I won’t dive into that right here), which generally makes the written word – or at least its appearance – more interesting.
This is where calligraphy sets come into play. Typically, this is a fountain pen that comes with a couple of different stub/italic nibs, which normally provide wide down strokes and thin side strokes. These sets often are available as (rather inexpensive) starter kits. Sometimes these sets are like veeeery inexpensive – but also as crappy as they are inexpensive, hence often killing the fun from scratch (pun indeed intended). But there are also better alternatives out there on the market.
